I will say that the example video did just seem like random samples from the video, I didn’t see the significance of those moments in particular. But it was still mildly entertaining to watch.

It does seem like it takes a certain amount of thoughtfulness and planning to remember to upload these keepsakes that I’m not 100% sure I have. I feel like I’d forget to do it without some kind of reminder.

This is overly dramatic and not true.

This exact situation occurred to me. I blocked all PRs with “request changes”. Most engineers don’t like AI slop, most take pride in their work.

The occasional AI slop engineer can be contained by rejecting their PRs, having team discussions around norms, bringing up feedback on retros, etc.

Do you work in an industry that requires good code? Perhaps you are just really talented and gotten hired by companies who demand excellence OR you're just really lucky. I'm a pretty run-of-the-mill developer (I care a lot about my craft but I'm not a "10xer" or whatever) and in my 20 years at, uhm, 5 or 6 different companies (once which was FULL of people who gave a shit), I would not say that "most" engineers don't take pride in their work, not even close. Most just want to finish up and get home.

At a high income level, you should have more buffer for life’s events if you’ve made good decisions in your life. Generally speaking.

For example, that mortgage, did you stretch the very limit of your income or did you buy something reasonable?

Nobody forced you to buy a house, you could also rent or commute longer.

I lived in a crappy rental for five years and commuted and was able to fully pay off my student loans at the beginning of my career. As an example

Education debt can be put on forbearance or deferment under many life circumstances.

Given high income level, you also have many options available to you like personal loans.

Without assuming the specifics as you do, it’s possible and entirely believable that any buffer was wiped out by the husband’s business. Access to credit could also be affected.

As long as we’re throwing anecdotes, access to forbearance and deferment is shaky at best. I’ve personally had inconsistent success across various income levels.

yeah well I make top 1% of income earners in my country, but yet I don't have any liquid(able) assets worth high five figures. House, if I'd sell it, would likely be worth less than I paid for it before pandemic. I couldn't really pay for lets say $200k treatment for next week. It might be the string that broke camel's back, a sinkhole I could never climb out of.

Those payments must have covered them, but they were denied instead.

UPDATE: also a minor proof in the days of wealth accumulation to the top 0.00001%, that (seemingly) wealthy Californian doctors and entrepreneurs are much much closer to bankruptcy than many of us could think.

I’m strongly against phones in school, but as a child myself, I was extremely unorganized. And did not get my act together fully until college, when I had a simple laptop with a calendar app where I could plan out all my classes, assignments, etc.

Likewise, women are probably more into supplements and holistic medicine than men, and there’s nothing “hatred of women” to observe that.

Hey there, semi related to your comment above, I read your point that "Sad that my comment got flagged, this is a major problem with hacker news - censorship of comments that prevent people from hearing all perspectives" and agree completely. I've been flagged and shadowbanned for mentioning Iryna Zarutska and in general, anything that people would rather silence than address with words and reason. I'd love to talk more about this. It's sad because most of the people here regard themselves highly but this doesn't match the experience of "this opinion is counter mine therefore it must vanish and I can go on believing no one disagrees with me"

Up until a couple months ago, none of these people would even describe themselves as “Iranian.”

They would all use another term to distinguish between themselves and those living in Iran.
