Everyone gets their own echo chamber now.

I want a TikTok-era Bowling Along examining the impact modern single feed social media has had on group participation in the new generations...

Is that a typo or a proposed title for the sequel.

(Even if it's a typo you should probably claim it as a sub-conscious coinage, since it's quite clever.)

A typo but I am hereby proposing that title for the sequel to Bowling Alone.

I switched to Firefox and have regular problems with sites not supporting it. I wound up having to cave and download Chrome for backup.

Google sez: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bear_and_the_Gardener#Idio...

> The story... relates how a solitary gardener encounters a lonely bear and they decide to become companions. One of the bear's duties is to keep the flies off his friend when he takes a nap. Unable to drive off a persistent fly, the bear seizes a paving stone to crush it and kills the gardener as well

> [..]

> The fable has given to the French language the idiom le pavé de l'ours (the bear's paving stone) and to German Bärendienst (a bear's service), both used for doing somebody or something a disservice or bad turn and sometimes for any ill-considered action with an unfortunate result. The Danish and Norwegian word bjørnetjeneste (bear-service) has similar meanings and the idiom also appears in other European languages.

Apparently the source of Russian's, too: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%B2%D0%B5...

How folksy. Give that jay a hat and we got a Disney movie cooking.

Tbh the jay would be more likely to eat the hat than wear it. He also was extremely clear that the bounds of our friendship did not include me touching him at all, but he’d usually just peck my finger, not actually fly away.

OMNY with iOS Express Mode is crazy fast. I don't even have to do anything besides hold my wrist or phone next to the entrance: https://support.apple.com/en-us/105123

I don't often do transfers, though.

Like the HN post we're commenting on, so too does this example also get regurgitated every few years.

Find modern examples by Googling "menu safe triangle." Here's one from 5 days ago https://www.framer.com/blog/cursor-trajectory/

> I asked the Framer Agent to fix it, and within minutes it had built and applied what I now call trajectory-based menu aim

The defendant submitted a remarkably high quality video of you saying you generated it with Nano Banana.

And their video was C2PA signed.

> This article applies to all Microsoft 365 for business subscriptions

I suspect the nonprofit arrangement is not an example of a "Microsoft 365 for business subscription"

Although the old nonprofit FAQ calls it, "the Microsoft 365 Business Premium nonprofit offer" https://web.archive.org/web/20260223193546/https://www.micro...

I really highly doubt that. The way Microsoft uses the “for business” branding is not in an IRS/legal way to distinguish between for-profit vs nonprofit entities. Rather more like “Discord vs Slack” or “a subreddit vs zendesk” type offering.

“For Organizations” would really have been a more appropriate branding. Governments around the world, including the US government, used plenty of “For Business” software from Microsoft. However, the “for business” branding tells you where the money came from.

So a nonprofit would almost certainly be on a “for business” subscription type. That is to distinguish it from a “for students”, “for home”, or the default “for one person” subscription type.

A nice technique to learn of this situation is to fail ("black hole") random resources in synthetic loads of the frontend. This lets you find out 'bout these single points of failure, and then you can start adding fallbacks.

This is a pretty ancient thing as far as the FE goes: https://www.stevesouders.com/blog/2010/06/01/frontend-spof/

The worst part of Amazon destroying priceless old books in the quest to build the torment nexus is the hypocrisy

They obviously aren’t priceless if Amazon is buying them for pennies.

all due respect but if they buy them they can do whatever they want with them. not like they are people and not like you have a right to them either. not even like you would have been able to acquire them yourself.

You're not really responding to the post, which is about the hypocrisy.

"They're allowed to be a hypocrite" doesn't mean they aren't a hypocrite.

Okay, let's say some books deserve the equivalent of UNESCO status. How would you, personally, go about this?
