The nicest to hold iPhone ever made was iPhone 5. I'm sure it was his favorite.

The first time I held an iPhone 5, I thought it was a demo device. It was too light to actually be the real device. That was such a great phone.

The iPhone 5 size was designed for people who use smartphones a healthy amount, ie not very much, usually in pocket and often one-handed for a small task. At some point, that was no longer how smartphones were most often used.

I kept my 5S as long as possible, until my carrier wouldn't even provide cell service to it.


Yep, this form factor was the peak. Like others said, if you run your life on your smartphone I guess it might not be sufficient. I just feel sorry for the people actually ruining their lives on their phones though. What shitty typing and multitasking experiences they must have...

15 seconds at a time, when the owner activates the feature. The scale of its recall is not meaningfully different than someone scribbling down 15 seconds worth of what they hear someone say (or even just remembering it), and does not pose a greater privacy risk than a scratchpad or human memory.

It’s also much less effective at recording people speaking for long durations than the audio recording feature that every smartphone for the last 20 years has supported.

This thread is so fascinating, I had no idea that because I'm comfortable having an intimate conversation with a friend means I'm also okay with a potentially permanent AI summary being generated based on it, and without my knowledge or consent!

Sure. But it's the exception. Most of my conversations are incredibly boring work stuff, where the records are extremely helpful to me too, or incredibly boring logistics discussion with family. Maybe you guys just have a lot more shocking secrets than I do.

What? It certainly keeps more information that a 15 second transcript.

There are two different features:

"Siri Recap" records throughout the day without the user needing to constantly enable it. It provides AI summaries of the recorded conversations including direct quotes.

"Live Rewind" shows an exact transcript of conversation but only of the 15 seconds immediately before the user activated it.

I want to do this eventually, but it's hard to split things into the micro-tasks that would be required to make this work on Anubis. One of the ideas I'm throwing around is a world where Anubis helps fuzz old games to find timesaves in tool-assisted speedruns. It's harder than you think.

The tools that exist for fuzzing speedruns (TASers call it "botting") are fairly primitive, excluding a few game-specific ones. Because of that, there really aren't that many TASes where a distributed randomised search could make improvements which don't get immediately overshadowed within a day of human attention. Improving botting tools and increasing their adoption would be more effective IMO. (Incidentally, TASVideos.org recently banned one of the people pioneering bot development.)

Meanwhile BOINC is well-established as the platform for distributed computation. If you can figure out how to squeeze its work units into Wasm challenges, I'm sure a lot of researchers would thank you.


BOINC isn't really built for "small tasks", afaik. Once you get small enough, the work the server is doing to manage the tasks gets to be around the same cost as the server just doing the tasks itself.

Yeah, I'm using PoW-based "DDOS defense mechanism" for a current project and had this thought too. I briefly looked into what it would take to exploit PoW to do something economically valuable like folding@home, and it looked a bit tricky. At first glance, these sort of projects seem a bit unsuitable for real-time PoW because they were designed to be run on desktops and so tend to do things in large batches. There probably are other use-cases that could be more suitable though.

Might be worth chucking that thought into Astra, especially if someone springs the $$$ money for it?

No, really you can't disable all of the services with SIP disabled, at least not the latest Tahoe. Maybe there's a better tool than launchctl, but I don't know what that is. Plus, you disable one, and it crashes and you have to debug it for an hour.

Yes, I'm exaggerating about the networking. Yes, you can lock it down by turning off all of the devices, but honestly, I'm still not 100% on that. It was a surprise to me after I disabled ethernet and wifi and turned off everything in system settings, and someone passed by with an ios device.

However, if you're an expert - please save me a year of trial and error and point me to the minimal list of services and daemons.

So many daemons. And while a lot can be disabled, some of them cause important stuff to break if you disable them, or even cause the OS to crash in a Heisenbugian fashion. And there's no documentation. So debugging this crap is anything but simple.

You can choose now, but what when you must use one of those, because no one cares about the built in system anymore, so it's neglected or even just covering the basics?

Judging by this entire page being the direct output of an LLM with little editing done at all I assume the feature is probably half baked and probably just a bunch of skills or harness tweaks? In that case, why would anyone pay for this at all?
