Idk much about VR, is 2160^2 per eye enough to not have screen-door effect? Can I replace my multi-monitor setup yet?

90% of screen door effect disappeared when we switched from pen-tile OLED to ordinary RGB matrix.

The remaining 10% still remained with the HP Reverb and the Pico 4 which I've used quite a bit, so it's not a solved issue but it's a world of difference from the old Vive or Quest 1 if that's your reference frame.

("pancake lenses" is a similar upgrade over the old fresnel lenses)


Vision Pro is 4x the resolution of this and is 100% suitable as a monitor replacement. Not what you asked, but maybe provides an upper bound?

It's around what the Quest 3 has. There is no noticeable screen door effect on that headset. Since you can make the monitors as big as you like, you could do a multi-monitor setup, maybe. ... as someone who uses VR pretty heavily though, I'm not sure I'd personally ... want to?

I'm being cheeky and implying that the reason signal's active backend is not disclosed as hoped for in a prior poster's comment is because the CIA (or other intelligence) is involved in it.

I really deeply worry about who is deciding what 'aligned' is. Amodei & his ilk talk like the hard part is getting the LLMs to behave, as if we've figured out morality itself. I don't think LLMs are going to be as dangerously capable as quickly as he does, but if I'm wrong and he's right, and they're building some sort of digital-lesser-god, I don't feel good that techbros at OpenAI and Anthropic are the moral arbitrators.

The sensor has special pixels which can detect phase differences in incoming light. Camera uses these pixels (aka embedded detectors on the image sensor) to be able to focus where you want. This is same from phones to professional cameras.

(DSLR cameras have independent phase detection arrays. This is why the mirror has a small mirror behind. To illuminate that section).

Lenses are tuned. They know how distant the thing they are focusing on, also photos' EXIF generally carries the focus point information. Side note: Apple Aperture used to be able to show where you focused with that info. Still no app does this. I'm still mad that we don't have Aperture anymore. Anyway...

So, if you collect this phasing information alongside the photo which you're taking, you are capturing the depth map of the photo. Its resolution will be lower, but not lower enough to be useless.

For example, Sony (and most probably all other big camera manufacturers) cameras use this phasing data throughout sensor in real-time for following moving subjects to keep the focus on them by predicting where they are going.

So, there's no "in theory". The phasing data is the depth map. Otherwise your camera can't focus on anything. It's there to focus, and it's done by reading the phasing data and knowing where to go by how much.

All fast AF systems are PDAF. When light is too low, then it's CDAF, which does way slower, without using any phase/depth data.
