Ask HN: What is some software that you wish existed?

What is a type of software, app, or tool that you wish someone would create because it doesn’t currently exist—or because the existing options aren’t good enough? It could also be some kind of hardware which is doable with current technology, but doesn't exist.

Fully open stack hardware video streamer, think open source Roku or AppleTV. Same for Airplay for audio. This enables open source digital sovereignty end to end for streaming media, with Jellyfin today and whatever the open media server streaming landscape looks like in the future.

Hardware authenticator to wave for access based on vein print biometrics. Similar to https://github.com/ZimengXiong/TinyTouch

Open source library management system for books and other media that supports federation with other instances. What books and media do I have? What books and media do I want? What books and media do others have and are potentially willing to lend out? How does this reconcile with OpenLibrary and Anna’s Archive? Bonus points if I can associate links to the digital versions of the physical media.

Open source Spotify like music desktop interface like Zotero. Drag to add music, autoclassified by MusicBrainz, uploaded to an S3 compatible target or whatever else rclone’s library supports. Support importing with yt-dlp and libtorrent. Ability to create and share playlists in an open format.

the open source spotify is pretty much napster 2.0

About the same as Spotify with ads, but without the ads.

Stable fast software that doesn't make the supercomputers we have feel like remote terminals from 1960s.

software to help with connector and wire harness debug
